Surface Design

In this project, I created a garment that has more structure and volume, creating a unique silhouette for a coat. I wanted to focus on the colors blue, purple, and silver to create more of a dreamy approach. During my process I was able to learn more about the technique of dyeing natural and synthetic fabrics, as well as fabric painting.

Skills Acquired: Garment Construction, Fabric Dyeing, & Fabric Painting.

For this coat, I wanted to experiment with both texture and volume. I began by modifying the sleeve pattern, extending it into a longer silhouette to create a natural ruching effect along the arms. To balance the visual weight at the top, I designed a bubble skirt pattern for the lower half of the coat, adding fullness to the overall silhouette. The result was a harmonious blend of structure and playfulness, achieved through thoughtful manipulation of shape and fabric.

Fabric Dyeing - Final Fabric

My dyeing process was very experimental as I used a mix of blue, purple, and black dyes in order to get a close match of an indigo shade. Since my fabric was made from synthetic fibers, I used dyes from the Rit Dye More collection, using 4 bottles of Sapphire Blue, 1 bottle of Royal Purple, and 1 bottle of Graphite. Using our fashion lab's dye vat I mixed my dyes, presoaked my fabric in water, and let my fabric dye for 15 minutes. Once it was time I rinsed out all the excess dye from the fabric using cold water and let my fabric air dry.
